Real People vs. Personas
Stop guessing who your buyers are and start asking them.

Personas offer structure, but relying on static profiles or generic AI assumptions risks stereotyping. Make sure you validate your strategy with direct customer feedback.
By definition, personas are semi-fictional representations of your ideal buyers, built from demographics, pain points, and behavioral traits. They are meant to foster empathy, but when marketing teams stop talking to real people, those profiles become rigid caricatures. You can keep your buyer profiles accurate and actionable with a few simple practices:
Build a customer advisory board and hold co-creation sessions
Invite power users and target prospective buyers into digital co-creation workshops using collaboration software. Rather than treating customers purely as research subjects, involve them early in concept design. Offer meaningful incentives such as product discounts, digital honorariums, or early access to new features to honor their time.
Run low-tech 1-on-1 interviews and quick intercepts
You don’t need specialized testing tools to gather deep qualitative insights. A quick phone call, Zoom interview, or brief website or in-person intercept is often all it takes. Focus on open-ended questions about what problem customers were trying to solve and where they felt stuck. Just a few direct conversations will quickly highlight recurring patterns.
Mine unfiltered feedback in online communities
Look beyond artificial focus groups by engaging in digital ethnography. Monitor organic conversations on Reddit, Discord, industry Slack groups, and review platforms like Trustpilot. Customers speak candidly in these spaces about their pain points, workaround solutions, and unvarnished opinions of your competitors.
Deploy micro-surveys and poll your frontline
You don’t need complex tracking code to catch fresh customer insights. Embed a single-question poll on your website confirmation page, add a quick prompt to automated emails, or send a monthly two-minute survey to your sales and support teams. Your frontline staff speak with buyers every day, making their anecdotal feedback and common customer objections one of the fastest, lowest-tech ways to validate your audience assumptions.
Challenging your assumptions requires intent, but gathering first-hand insights from real users is the best way to ensure your message hits the mark every time.
