Simple observation methods that work.

Observation is one of the easiest and most effective ways to design better experiences. By watching real people interact with your product, site, or space, you’ll quickly see where they succeed, where they stumble, and what you can improve.

Take it for a test drive

For print or physical products, testing can be very simple. Create a paper dummy or prototype and ask a few people to use it. Watch for things like:

  • Do they fumble with any features?
  • Is it too big or too small to hold?
  • Is anything sticking out to snag clothing?
  • Does the weight feel right for its purpose?
  • What are their facial expressions or comments while using it?

Small tweaks such as adjusting size, weight, or layout can make your product easier to use and more effective.

Check the context

Digital products and environments bring more complexity. Be sure to pay attention to:

  • Lighting, noise, and distractions
  • How people are seated or standing while interacting
  • External factors like kids, traffic, or hunger
  • Level of focus or frustration

Even if you can’t test in every real-life condition, noticing the environment reveals hidden barriers.

Spot the patterns

Don’t have the budget for a full-blown test? Look around. Everyday situations are full of examples. One I’ve been observing lately is good and bad environments when you need to wait. Doctor’s offices, car repair shops, nail salons, supermarkets, drug stores, theater lines, and more.

  • Good examples: calming sounds, free Wi-Fi, clear signage, human guides, a complimentary Lyft ride
  • Bad examples: locked-up products, lack of properly trained staff, having to answer the same question multiple times, chaotic or loud spaces

Observing how others handle common challenges can inspire ideas for your own designs.

Stay curious

The opportunities to learn are endless. Every situation you’re in is a chance to notice what makes an experience better or worse.

Final thought: Pick one current project and run a quick observation test this week. Even a few minutes of watching will uncover ways to make life easier for your users.
